San Jose, Santa Clara Plumbing Tip: Running or leaking Toilet

DID YOU KNOW! When you have a running toilet it can affect the cost of your water bill significantly. What should you do? The first thing to do is listening to the toilet. This will determine were the problem is located.
    1. If you hear water running constantly the problems lies with the ball cock. Remove the toilet tank lid and see if the water is draining into the flush valve overflow tube. The ball cock is the mechanism that allows the toilet tank to fill with water. It normally has some type of float to stop the task from filling. If this fails the water will drain into the flush valve overflow tub to prevent flooding.
    2. If you hear the water runs momentarily in intervals (Intervals can rage in time) the problem lies with the flapper stopper. Normally this is a rubber plug that is connected to the flush valve and toilet handle with a chain. Simply remove the flapper legs from the flush valve and remove the chain from the toilet handle and reinstall a new flapper and you should be done.
Replacing the flapper stopper requires no plumbing experience on the other had you may want to consult Tony’s Plumbing Co if the ball cock needs replacing. Also keep in mind that the Ball cock and flapper stopper are items found in standard and conventional toilets. The newer toilets have developed new nonstandard mechanism that may require special ordering.

Hot Water Heater Problems, warm water only

When a water heater produces worm water only you have a problem with the dip tub. The dip tube is a plastic pipe that fits down into the water heater inlet, and usually has a small hole about 6 inches from the top of the pipe. The dip tube directs the incoming cold liquid down to the bottom of the tank.  If the dip tube is broken, the incoming cold liquid can mix with the outgoing hot liquid and cause it to seem as though you are running out of hot water.
Other causes may include: wrong setting on a thermostat, a defective thermostat, burned out heating elements (electric water heaters only), or a heavy buildup of sediment.
If you can’t resolve your water heater problems you can always count on use for accurate and professional service. We are available 24hrs a day.

Hot Water Heater with popping sound

The popping noise in the water heater is from the buildup of sediment in the bottom of the tank. When the burner fires, the water between the tank and sediment will reach a boiling point and it’s the lifting action of the water popping through the sediment that you hear. This type of problem can’t be corrected and the water heater should be replaced.
Flushing the tank once a year would have avoided this problem. Trying to flush the tank when the problem exists will probably not resolve the issue… More and likely the sediment will be nearly solid, almost rock like and will not drain out. As Tony Plumbing Co. suggested replacing the heater will be your best course of action. You will experience tank failure, it could be in 1 month or a year, but it will go bad soon. When you get your new water heater it would be a good idea to get in the habit of visually checking the tank frequently and getting the water heater tank flushed once or twice a year.  Installing a water softer may reduce your maintenance obligations.

Water Heater Leaking near Santa Clara

What happens if my Water Heater is Leaking ?

A water heater may leak from many places. The rule of thumb is if you can see the source of the leak more and likely it can be repaired. If the source of the leak cannot be visualized the heater more and likely has to be replace. This is because if the source can’t be visualized 99.9% of the time the water heater tank is broken. The tank of a water heater can’t be repaired. You will have to replace the water heater.

Sewer Blockage Service near Santa Clara

    What causes a sewer blockage?
Depending on the location of the blockage, the problems may vary. Here are a few examples of sewer blockages and their locations.

    1. Toilet stoppage: These type of stoppages are normally cause by an object getting stuck in the trap of the toilet bowl or a large bowl movement. If a toilet is flushed and its water come out of a shower or tub drain this is an indication that the toilet is not backed up in fact it is the main sewer line with the problem
    2. Tub and Shower stoppage: This type stoppage is normally cause by hair builds up in the internal portion of the drain. A simple strainer on the drain may prevent or prolong the stoppage.
    3. Vanity sink or Wash Bowl stoppages:  These types of stoppages are caused by slug and or hair builds up. Most of the time the blockage is located in the pop-up assembly area. This type of blockages may be easily cleared with a coat hanger but could be very messy.
    4. Kitchen stoppages: A kitchen sinks stoppage is normally cause by grease build up or a rapped overload of your food disposal. You may not be dumping grease in your drain but the grease in the soap you use whether to clean your hands or dishes build up and cause a blockage in time.
    5. Main Drain stoppages: A main line normally back up due to root growth by a nearby tree. Other causes include cracks, Breaks and bad slope.

Most stoppages require the use of professional equipment to clear. It is best to call upon a license plumber (Tony’s Plumbing Co.) to take care of these stoppages.
